ILTI Week 5: Finishing Strong
It is with both enthusiasm and reluctance that we enter this fifth and final week of the International Literacy Training Institute (ILTI). Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, having four-fifths of the intense experience behind them, students look forward to returning to family and friends at home. Yet, at the same time, they consider they may never see their classmates again this side of heaven. Primer Construction begins. Graduation at Redeemer Covenant Church is the Friday finale.
This seems like a week for reunions as friends who have a vision for literacy evangelism around the world stop in for a visit. Ken and Lori Martin (ILTI graduate 2010 and LEI-Canada) and Rev. Carey Jo Johnston (LEI-Canada Managing Director) are here for the week as Lori and Carey Jo lead the Primer Construction classes. Ana Marie Ort is here from Louisville, Kentucky, (Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) completing the Primer Construction teaching team.
Our newest LEI missionary, MK Bharti (ILTI graduate 2011) arrived from India for a Primer Construction refresher this week and LEI missionary orientation next week. MK will return to India, after visiting churches and friends here in the US, to continue literacy ministry and church planting.
Pastor Gregory Bangura (LEI West Africa Director) visits with the West African students. Pictured here are David (Togo), Helena (Ghana), Emmanuel (Ghana), Gregory (Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast), and Innocent (Ivory Coast and Nigeria). They make an enthusiastic team.
Bible study this morning was led by Dr. Funlola (South Africa). She led us to make observations of Daniel 4:1-18. In this chapter, King Nebuchadnezzar seems to finally understand the magnitude and majesty of the Most High God. Again the king has a frightening dream that he trusts Daniel to interpret. The dream is about a huge, strong tree that was visible to the end of the earth. But the tree was chopped down, and a stump with roots banded by iron and bronze was left. Tomorrow we will discover how Daniel interprets the dream.
Chapel today was led by Rev. Carey Jo Johnson. She read Psalm 139 for us and described how God knew her before she was born. He has an amazing plan for her life. The Lord led her from a secular computer job to Fuller Seminary. She traveled around the world with Dr. Bob Rice to do primer construction and literacy evangelism. The ministry she now has combines all of the gifts and skills she has acquired throughout her lifetime. Her loves of computers, math, language, travel, and linguistics are combined in literacy ministry. As she obeys the Lord's call, she has seen amazing things happen that further God's work here on earth and influence the complexion of heaven.
Margie and Rev. Joe Scruggs (LEI Board of Trustees and LEI Alumni Board of Trustees members) and ladies from Redeemer Covenant Church prepared a scrumptious lunch. We greatly appreciate them for blessing our students in this way.
